New year, new you. You’ve heard it before or maybe you’ve been saying it yourself. January 1st is the perfect time to hit the restart button and make a change for the better.
Whether you’re trying to lose weight, eat healthier, change careers, or learn a new skill, what better day to start than day one of a brand new year?
The problem is, plenty of people make resolutions year after year and never stick with them. They feel motivated and decide that this year is THE year just to fall back in their old habits within a matter of weeks.
7 Common Reasons Your New Year’s Resolution Fails
If you want to be one of the few that actually achieve their goals, you need to learn why most people fail.
1. You didn’t write them down
Creating a goal without writing it down means you’re just wishing for things to happen. If you don’t write your goals down, you are less likely to achieve them and you are more likely to forget what they even were.
Write down your goals and put them somewhere that you can see them. Make it a habit to read your goals every day to keep you motivated.
2. You didn’t make a plan
How exactly were you planning to reach your goals? If your goal is to lose weight, are you planning on eating better and being physically active?
If your goal was to include more vegetables in your diet, have you found new recipes that include vegetables? How many vegetables do you even like?
You have to figure out what steps you will take to reach your goal every day. Your plan doesn’t need to be extreme. You just need to figure out the best way for you to reach your goals.
3. You made too many resolutions
So your resolutions were to lose 20 pounds, run a marathon, become a vegetarian, change careers, drink a gallon of water every day, and read 12 books… and you expect to accomplish all of this in just one year?
The chances of you reaching all of these goals are pretty low. And because you’re trying to do everything, you’re not putting your focus into the goals you can actually achieve.
This can result in you not achieving anything at all! In fact, you might even gain more weight instead of losing it because you’re so stressed out from trying to become this completely different person by the end of the year.
Pick 1 – 3 things that you really want to accomplish this year and focus on those ONLY.
4. You’re expecting immediate results
Nothing worth having comes easy. If you have goals that require daily changes in your life, you may not see results as quickly as you would like.
Hang in there! It can be tough to put in the work and not see any progress but remember that there are multiple ways to track progress.
If your goal is to lose weight but the scale isn’t moving, try tracking your energy levels, the way your clothes fit, waist measurements, sleep routine, or other things that come as a result of living a healthier lifestyle.
If your goal is to eat healthier, track how many times you bring your lunch to work or create a cookbook of all the new recipes you’ve tried. Celebrate the little victories along the way.
5. You don’t have enough time
When you created your plan, did you take into account the amount of time it would take for you to go running, go to the gym, or cook your food?
If you have a full-time job, a family, or other responsibilities, then you have to schedule a time to work on your goals. That way, you can balance the other activities in your life.
Pick a few days out of the week that you know you can dedicate to going to the gym. You don’t have to go every day to meet your goals. If you want to start running, check out my how to start running series before you start your training.
If your goal is to eat healthier, try meal prepping for three days in advance or meal prep only your dinners and try taking easier meals like sandwiches or salads for lunch.
6. You don’t enjoy the process
If you have to force yourself to do something day in and day out, the chances of you sticking with it are pretty low.
Yes, your resolution will be challenging at first. But if you continue to dread doing something after the first few weeks, then you need a new resolution.
Find things to do that you will actually enjoy. If you want to start working out but hate going to the gym, try a Zumba class instead.
If that doesn’t work, try yoga, pole dancing, cycling, walking… there are plenty of ways to stay active. You just have to figure out what’s going to work best for you.
This also applies to healthy eating and any other goal. Find fun new recipes. Have a healthy potluck with friends.
Discover new restaurants in your city. Just because you’re eating healthy, doesn’t mean your food has to suck!
7. You don’t have support
Don’t keep your goals to yourself. You’re more likely to achieve your goals if you have a strong support system. Share your goals with someone that you know will keep you accountable.
Find a workout partner or someone to meal prep with. At the very least, find people that will cheer you on. It will make a huge difference.
Change isn’t easy. You need people around you to influence you and keep you on track.
