6 Summer Essentials for Black Runners
Summer is here and the temperatures are quickly rising. If you live in the south like me, then you know how disrespectful that summer heat and humidity can be.
As runners, it’s important that we stay cool and protect ourselves from the heat at all costs. As black runners, it’s important that we find the right accessories and products that work with our skin, our hair, and our black girl magic.

Here’s my list of summer running must-haves for black runners.
Check it out and let me know what some of your essentials are!
1. Water Bottle
Hydration is key! It’s important to drink water all day but especially before and after you run. If you are someone that runs in the middle of the day or runs longer distances, you may want to invest in a handheld water bottle so that you can stay hydrated at all times.

2. Water Carrier
Water carriers are great when you need to keep water nearby. There are several different types of water carriers such as vests, belts, and handhelds. All of them work great, it just depends on your preference. If you’re the type of person that doesn’t like to carry things while you run, you may prefer a hydration vest or belt.
Camelbak Circuit Running Hydration Vest - holds 50 oz
Fitletic Hydra 16 Hydration Belt - holds two 8oz water bottles
Water Bottle Sleeve Carrier Holder - holds up to 128 oz
Our melanin is magical but it does not completely protect us from the sun or prevent us from getting skin cancer. It can be hard to find sunblock for black people because it often leaves a white residue. However, it’s still important to find and use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF for protection.

Neutrogena Beach Defense - Great for Any Activity
COOLA Organic Sunscreen Spray - Vegan Friendly
Consumer Reports rank Neutrogena Beach Defense one of the best sunscreens for 2020. It is a sun protection spray with 70 SPF.
While this one is a matter of personal preference, I would consider it an essential for many reasons. For one, a hat can help protect your head from the sun and prevent your scalp from burning. If you have a shaved head, then I highly recommend investing in a hat during these hotter months.
A hat also protects your eyes from other elements like rain, wind, and dust. And it helps keep your sweat from getting into your eyes.
For all my runners that have kinky, coily, and curly hair, a visor might be more helpful. I have two Nike visors that I love because I don’t have to worry about braiding my hair just to wear a hat. A visor gives you the freedom to wear your hair in a high bun or high puff or any other style you prefer.

Sunglasses are crucial if you can’t commit to early morning runs or evening runs. And depending on where you live and what time you run, the sun might still be visible in the earlier hours of the day so it’s good to invest in a pair of sunglasses.
Sunglasses help protect your eyes from the sun so that you don’t have to worry about squinting or causing strain on your eyes. They can also help to keep out dirt and dust providing comfort and protection on your run.
